SEATTLE, WA (Nov.11, 2009) – It's that time of year again, when people are looking for ways to help and be helped by The Salvation Army and other organizations. In these tough times, The Salvation Army is seeing a 30% increase in social service and basic needs. The list below provides just some of the ways people can give back this year, along with events created to feed the hungry during the holidays. Also included are tips for those looking to safely donate funds and those receiving assistance.
- The Salvation Army has joined forces with JC Penney, for the Angel Tree Program - where shoppers can go to jcp.com/angel and adopt an 'angel' to provide children and seniors across the country with Christmas gifts.
- Donors gave give financially to our Online Red Kettle Program at onlineredkettle.com an annual fundraising event designed to fill a kettle and give back to every zip code in the nation.
- Local toy drives will begin after Thanksgiving, including barrels at businesses where toys can be donated and Giving Trees filled with tags describing specific child needs
- In some areas next week the famous red kettles will line the streets of the Puget Sound area, in order to raise funds for local social service and domestic violence programs. In several location this year, credit card kettles will be available for donors. They simply swipe their cards!
- All of the local Salvation Army Corps/Community Centers will offer various Thanksgiving and Christmas meals and programs to provide food, gifts and much more for those in need. To find a corp nearest you or to learn more about how to volunteer visit www.salvationarmy.org
**The Salvation Army would like to remind donors and those seeking assistance that this time of year can also bring with it scams. The Salvation Army along with any other legitimate organization will never ask for a social security or bank account number. The local Salvation Army also does not do phone solicitation other than recordings that mention upcoming mailings.**
