2014 - The Year In Review
As the new year begins, let's look back at some of our favorite stories from 2014...
The Salvation Army's International Leaders & Pope Francis Share In Prayer At The Vatican
The first-ever private meeting between a Salvation Army General and a Pope was an occasion where the grandeur of the surroundings of the Vatican was in contrast to the informal warmth of the interaction between the world leaders of The Salvation Army and the Roman Catholic Church. The meeting was the culmination of conversations held between Salvation Army and Vatican representatives from 2007 to 2012 – newly published in a book – but also the expression of the desire to continue these conversations. Seattle Times Story Features Weekend Backpack Program At The Salvation Army In Renton
The Salvation Army in Western Washington was honored once again this year to participate in the Seattle Times' Fund for the Needy campaign. The annual campaign raises money from the newspaper’s readers, and distributes the money to twelve social service agencies. The Salvation Army has been a recipient of funds from the campaign since its inception in 1979. This ongoing partnership is valuable to The Salvation Army, as it provides important funds for the “winter relief” program. This time of year, many families struggle to make ends meet. The Salvation Army Participates In Summer Feeding Program Throughout Washington State
The state program is funded by the USDA Summer Food Service Program, and established to ensure that children would continue to receive nutritious meals during long school vacations. The program serves children and teens in all areas of the state – but is particularly focused on feeding kids who otherwise may not have a meal during the day. “Here in White Center, more than 80% of the kids receive free or reduced meals at school during the academic year,” said Major Raymond Erickson-King, Corps officer of the White Center Corps in Seattle. “In fact, the need in this community is so significant, that we are also serving breakfast during the summer months.” Read about this program by clicking HERE |
Coeur d'Alene Kroc Center Partners With Heritage Health To Host Annual "Muddy Miles" Fundraiser
No one was safe from the water and the mud. When the wind kicked up Saturday afternoon, even spectators fell prey to the water cannons and sprinklers that rained down never-ending streams at the 2014 Muddy Miles. The main arena in the Kootenai County Fairgrounds was transformed into a wet and muddy obstacle course as hundreds of participants climbed over and slid down mounds of dirt, waded through puddles and sloshed their way to the finish line.
