Work is underway at The Salvation Army in Port Angeles, WA – on a new building for increased social services to the community. Two years ago, The Army purchased an empty auto parts store across the street from its current location on Peabody Street. After a couple of years of planning and fundraising, construction has started to convert the store into a multi-use building for The Salvation Army in Clallam County.

A new roof has been added to the building, giving it a much needed facelift. Inside, the old building has been cleared out, with new interior walls being reconfigured to better organize the space. Work has started on updating the plumbing and electrical.

The new building will include a larger food bank, with increased space for receiving, storing, and distributing food. There will also be a larger, more comfortable dining area for the meals offered free to the community every day. The meals will be prepared in a new commercial-grade kitchen, which may also be used for cooking classes.

The facility will include a hygiene center – a new service offered to people in need in the community. “We’re going to add shower and laundry facilities to the new building,” said Major Scott Ramsey, director of The Salvation Army in Port Angeles. “If we truly want to help people improve their situation, we need to start with some basic hygiene. How can we expect them to get jobs, and apply for housing, if they don’t have a place to take a shower and wash their clothes.”

Work on the building began in September 2014, and is scheduled to be completed by summer 2015.
