A house in Chehalis, WA is giving new meaning to the word face-lift. With the combined efforts of The Salvation Army, KOMO TV/Radio News and a generous contractor, the flood ravaged home is being lifted five feet off the ground.

Two record-setting floods hit Lewis County within a year. The water damaged and destroyed thousands of homes including Dorothy Mako’s. Now she’s determined to keep dry this winter should the Chehalis River flood again.

The Salvation Army has assisted thousands since the first round of floods hit the area in late 2007. With the long-term recovery process in full swing, more families are still trying to make repairs to their homes and their lives. It is with thanks to KOMO viewers and listeners who donated funds, that The Salvation Army can continue meeting these basic needs to those affected, including Dorothy.

When Mako gathered money to raise her home she still needed $10,000 more. That’s when The Salvation Army stepped in, looked around and found a contractor willing to do the work for less much less than a similar job would usually cost.

After being evacuated from her house four times in 31 years because of floods, Dorothy says she’s tired. But she’s now filled with hope. “My minister friend said one thing about it: 'I'm closer to Heaven,” Mako said, with a chuckle
