Give A Child A Direction Through The Summer Camp Experience
Every year, between the months of June and August, The Salvation Army's summer camps give children of varying ages the chance to explore the outdoors away from home. For anyone lucky enough to have experienced camp, you have an understanding of the memories created, from hiking and swimming to telling stories around the fire. Campers are given the opportunity to experience a variety of activities, including creating arts and crafts, hiking in the wilderness and nature classes, boating and swimming, organized sports like basketball or softball, or even just time to lounge around in the sun and talk with new friends.
Last year, almost 200,000 children attended The Salvation Army’s summer and day camps. Our programs provide children from low-income families with a life-changing experience in the outdoors, where many are introduced to Christ for the first time in their lives, and where they will be nurtured and encouraged. And while a single camping session lasts only a few days or even a week, the camping experience can impact a child's outlook for a lifetime. Here are just a few short examples of children who have attended Salvation Army camps:
Seth (14) and Jeremiah (9)
Brothers Seth, age 14, and Jeremiah, age 9, struggled through school both academically and socially. Both had experienced bullying leading to a belief that they wouldn’t accomplish much in life. Their parents felt a positive experience during the summer might help the boys build their self-confidence and grow to be more independent. Seth and Jeremiah were sent to The Salvation Army Camp. By the end of their week at camp, Seth said, “I was happy to see there were other kids like me,” and Jeremiah felt good to do things for himself without the assistance of his brother or parents.
Todd (10)
When 10 year-old Todd was asked what his favorite thing about summer camp was, he wouldn’t give an answer. His counselor started making suggestions. Maybe it was the high ropes course or the paddleboats? Perhaps it was going swimming, hiking, or fishing? But Todd said no to each of those activities.
Todd’s counselor took a deep breath and asked, “Then what was the most important thing you experienced at camp?” After a few very quiet seconds, he whispered “getting to eat three times each day” and he smiled.
Emily (7)
“Fish! Fish! Fish!” Last summer Emily, age 7, fishing pole in hand, was running back and forth on the bank of the pond at camp shouting to everyone that she saw fish! Her big brown eyes were wide with excitement as she showed us the fish in the clear, cold water. For most of us, seeing a fish may not be news worthy but for a child experiencing the mountains for the first time…it could be life-changing!
This summer, children from Washington state, northern Idaho and western Montana will be travelling to The Salvation Army's summer camps in Eatonville and Loon Lake, WA for a time of discovery, friendship, learning and personal growth. The campfires, hiking, camp songs and - and yes, even seeing fish - will provide great memories for great kids! Will you consider making a week at camp a reality for another child this summer?
