Seattle Seahawk Russell Okung was the star of the evening at the recent fundraiser for The Salvation Army in Renton. The offensive tackle and recent Superbowl champion posed for photos, signed autographs, and gave the evening’s keynote speech.

Hosted by Captains Chris and Lisa Aird, Corps officers of The Salvation Army in Renton, this year was the ninth annual “Need Knows No Season” event. Donations received at the event will benefit Salvation Army programs and services in Renton.

During his keynote speech, Russell Okung shared personal thoughts about career, life, and success. He surprised audiences when he said that winning the Superbowl wasn’t the “best moment” of his life. Despite being proud of his work and accomplishment, he reminded guests of the importance of serving others. He shared the story of his recent mission trip to Brazil where he worked with children in an orphanage, and the impact they had on his life. That trip, he said, was the “best moment” of his life.

Other highlights from the “Need Knows No Season” event included Tony Ventrella as the master of ceremonies. The former Seattle TV sports anchor-turned-inspirational speaker moderated question and answer segment with a woman whose life was changed by The Salvation Army.

Many sponsors helped make “Need Knows No Season” a success. Presenting sponsor was Fred Meyer; gold sponsor was David & Susan Holt; and silver sponsor was a group of Friends of The Salvation Army in Renton. The following individuals and groups supported the event as bronze sponsors: First Savings Bank Northwest; Janice Tanner, Soroptimists International of Renton; Jerry & Jody Bentler; Harry & Janet Blencoe; Dennis & Julie Hamilton; and Lee & Merna Wheeler.
