The Salvation Army is honored to host the Washington State Summer Food Service Program at many locations throughout the state. The program provides free meals and snacks to all children and teens (18 years and younger) during the summer months. No proof of income, address or citizenship is required.

Good nutrition is essential for effective learning every day, all year long. Just as learning does not end when school lets out, neither does the need for good nutrition. Children who aren’t hungry learn better, act better, and feel better. The summer feeding programs help children get the nutrition they need to learn, play, and grow throughout the summer months when they are out of school.

The state program is funded by the USDA Summer Food Service Program, and established to ensure that children would continue to receive nutritious meals during long school vacations, when they do not have access to school lunch. The program serves children and teens in all areas of the state – but is particularly focused on feeding kids who otherwise may not have a meal during the day.

“Here in White Center, more than 80% of the kids receive free or reduced meals at school during the academic year,” said Major Raymond Erickson-King, Corps officer of the White Center Corps in Seattle. “In fact, the need in this community is so significant, that we are also serving breakfast during the summer months.”
