As summer turns into fall, state and county fairs are held throughout the Northwest. It’s a time for food, fun, and festivity for all who attend. Many people attend their local fairs as an end-of-summer tradition.

But what about the families who can’t afford the admission price for their local fair? County fairs average about $10 per person, and state fairs are often more than $20 per person. Unfortunately, attending the fair is simply cost-prohibitive for many families.

In response to this situation, The Salvation Army in Bremerton, WA, hosted its own fair on Friday, August 22. The sunny day was perfect for the lunch of grilled hot dogs and hamburgers, followed by a watermelon eating contest. The event was free and open to the public, and more than 200 people attended.

“The Kitsap County Fair and Stampede is lots of fun – I’ve had the opportunity to attend it several times over the years,” reported Major James Baker of The Salvation Army in Bremerton. “So we’ve created a mini-fair right here in Bremerton, for the less fortunate families to have some fun during fair season.”
