The Seattle Times wrapped up its annual Fund for the Needy campaign in early February. Once again, the newspaper’s readers donated generously to families in need throughout the community.

The annual campaign raises money from the newspaper’s readers, and distributes the money to twelve social service agencies. This year, the campaign reached $1,287,878 – exceeding one million dollars for the fourth consecutive year.

The Salvation Army has been a recipient of funds from the campaign since its inception in 1979. This ongoing partnership is valuable to The Salvation Army, as it provides important funds for the “winter relief” program:

  • Rent Assistance: Helping families stay in their homes is a year-round goal of The Salvation Army. During winter months, it is especially important that families are safe at home.
  • Utility Assistance: Helping families maintain their water and power services is crucial during the winter months. The Salvation Army seeks to help struggling families maintain basic amenities, including electricity, gas, and water.
  • Grocery and Food Assistance: The Salvation Army helps struggling families keep food on the table, and of our locations have food pantries and/or community meals throughout the year. During Thanksgiving and Christmas, we provide food boxes, grocery cards, or celebratory meals to our neighbors who need help.
  • Christmas Gifts for Kids: The Salvation Army wants every child to know the joy of Christmas. Through the generosity of donors in the community, toys are shared with families who can’t afford to buy gifts.

“It’s clear that the Times staff works diligently on the campaign ,”stated Major Douglas Tollerud, commander of The Salvation Army in Washington, northern Idaho, and western Montana. “The stories about the families helped by the Fund for the Needy are powerful, and the readers respond generously. We are so fortunate to have this resource in our community.”
