As the temperatures drop in King County, The Salvation Army steps up its commitment to helping the neediest people in the community.

Cold Weather Shelters

The Salvation Army operates Cold Weather Shelters during the coldest nights in King County. Presently, three locations are open for homeless residents to spend the night indoors, safe from dangerous weather conditions. The Army provides sleeping mats, blankets, and hot coffee.

Utility Bill Assistance

The Salvation Army helps needy King County residents pay utility bills, so heat and other basic needs aren't forfeited. Through the Filco Fund, all Salvation Army Corps (locations) have a budget for directly paying local utility companies on behalf of residents who are in danger of losing coverage. To qualify for assistance, residents must bring the following items to a Salvation Army Corps

  • 1. An unpaid utility bill marked "Urgent" or "Final Notice"
  • 2. Photo identification
  • 3. Verification of income

The Filco Fund was established in 2010, through a generous grant from Seattle-based Filco Environmental Tank Services. Thus far, the corporation has contributed funds to help more than 160 families in King County avoid losing their utilities.
