The Salvation Army Announces Closing of Thrift Store in Mt. Vernon, WA
The Thrift Store, located at 1101 East College Way in Mt. Vernon, has been owned and operated by The Salvation Army for more than 25 years. Due to the recent decline in the local economy, store business has dropped in the past year. As a result, the store will be permanently closed. The store's current employees (six full-time and five part-time) will be laid off on February 15.
The Salvation Army has a long tradition of operating successful Thrift Stores throughout the country. Each store, including the Mt. Vernon location, is operated as a stand-alone business and needs to balance its budget each year. "Making the decision to close this store was a difficult one. We've been part of this community for decades," said Lt. Col. Doug O'Brien, Divisional Commander for The Salvation Army NW. "Unfortunately, many consecutive months of losing money require that we close the store." The nearest Salvation Army Thrift Store is still open in Bellingham (1515 Birchwood).
The 12,000-square-foot building was built in 1982 and is owned by The Salvation Army. Future plans for the building have not been determined.
The store will remain open until Tuesday, February 15, pending available merchandise. Daily shopping hours are 10am to 6pm; donations are still being accepted, daily 10am to 5pm (subject to change).
