Neighbors visiting The Salvation Army food bank in White Center can receive guidance on cooking and nutrition each week. Through a partnership with Public Health, Seattle/King County, nutrition educator Golda Simon visits every Monday to share information about healthy cooking.

During each of her weekly visits, Golda focuses on a specific topic. Her main goal is to encourage the use of food bank products in new ways, with an emphasis on cooking with (and eating!) whole grains, low fat, and low sugar. Most importantly, she helps food bank visitors creatively make use of what is available that day.

Major Raymond Erickson-King, Corps Officer at Seattle White Center, arranged for Golda to visit the food bank. “With attendance at our food bank growing, plus our programs for senior citizens every day, there are many people who can benefit from Golda’s guidance.” He continued, “She helps them understand the importance and ease of eating a well-balanced diet.”

Golda attracts attention with the aroma of her cooking lessons. She takes items directly from the food bank and demonstrates how easy it is to prepare them. Then, she shares recipes and nutrition tips sheets, so visitors can take them home and refer to them later.
