The Salvation Army Northwest Division announces the appointment of Lieutenants Josh and Ryan Boyd to its location in Yakima, WA. They replace Majors Jack and Dawn Smith, who retired this month.

For the past four years, Lts. Boyd have led The Salvation Army in Anacortes, WA. In June 2011, they graduated from The Salvation Army Officer Training College in Crestmont, CA, each with an Associate of Arts degree in Ministry.

The Lts. Boyd continue a long tradition of Salvation Army leadership in their families – Josh is a fifth generation Salvation Army officer, and Ryan is a sixth generation officer. They have two children: daughter Jordyn (age six) and son Jacob (age four)

As Salvation Army officers, the Lts. expect to be reassigned throughout their careers. The commitment of being an officer includes moving your family frequently, and accepting reassignments based on career development and filling the needs of The Salvation Army locations. The assignment in Yakima is an acknowledgement of their ability to manage a large community center and congregation.

They begin work in Yakima on July 1. “We’re sad to leave Anacortes, but very happy to begin working in Yakima,” said Lt. Josh Boyd. “It’s a bigger community, with more need, but we’ll also have more resources to help people.”

Established in 1893, The Salvation Army in Yakima provides social services to families in need. Among the programs offered are senior meal program, food bank, rent and utility assistance, emergency disaster services, and thrift stores. Holiday programs include holiday meals, food baskets, and toy donations. Last year, The Salvation Army in Yakima served more than 34,000 individuals in the community.
