This month, let’s talk about Domestic Violence, and wear a purple ribbon to promote awareness of the toll it takes on many in the community.

Domestic violence is an intentional pattern of abusive tactics (emotional, verbal, financial, physical, and sexual) used by perpetrators to establish and maintain power and control in intimate relationships.

  • One in four women, and one in seven men, will experience domestic violence in their lifetime.
  • Domestic Violence is a primary cause of homelessness for women and children in America.

The Salvation Army has specialized programs to assist domestic violence survivors in King county. Based in Seattle, WA, the program offers an array of services for families whose lives have been affected by domestic abuse. Services include: an emergency shelter (Catherine Booth House), a transitional housing program (Hickman House), and a community advocacy program (CAP), that provides legal advocacy, community education, and individual supportive counseling and advocacy.

Sadly, nearly everyone knows someone who is surviving domestic violence right now. This month, make it a priority to talk about domestic violence with everyone – friends, family, teammates and co-workers. Together, we will break the silence, show support, and build a community that is ready to end domestic violence.
