Starbucks CEO Howard Shultz and Washington Post editor Rajiv Chandrasekaren collaborated on a book that was released this week, just in time for Veterans Day, called "For Love of Country." The book tells the stories of the men and women who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Schultz hopes the book is a reminder to all Americans about the conflicts they know little about and would probably like to forget.

"It's unhealthy for a nation to be detached from the people who secure it," said author Chandrasekaren in an interview about the book. According to the authors, most of us do not know anyone who wears a uniform in service to our country. Fifty years ago, or even 20 years ago, that wouldn't have been so. When doing research for the book, Schultz and Chandrasekaren also found that 55% of Iraq veterans felt disconnected from civilian life when they returned from deployment. That's because fewer than 1% of Americans served in Iraq or Afghanistan and most of the other 99% who didn't were too busy with their own lives to notice when they came home. Let's change that!

This year, on Veteran's Day - November 11 - we encourage all of our friends, family and readers to spend some time getting to know active-duty military or veterans. Check your local news for a listing of community events, and take time to support those who served our country faithfully throughout the years

And if you know a veteran who needs help connecting with his or her community, please contact your local Salvation Army to inequire about veterans programs which can help with things like housing, vocational assistance, and much more.
